Anyway, this semester, my sister Avery and I are doing OW together. We haven't done much so far, but I'm already enjoying it! One thing I didn't really foresee was deciding to try Sci-fi instead of Fantasy. I really don't have a lot of experience with the Sci-fi genre at all (except for Star Wars, but that's about it) so I'm not sure what I'm getting myself into. I don't know a ton about science, at least, I don't know how much I'll be able to support any technology I think up. (I suppose I have had three years of high school science. This is where physics comes in handy!) But I'm still really excited. Part of OW is learning about the genres themselves before learning to write them, so it's a great way to start out with Sci-fi. I also have access to a bunch of books through the curriculum, so I'm looking forward to getting to know the genre (as well as having new reading material!)
I think one thing that fascinates me about Sci-fi is all the incredible technology. It will be so fun to come up with some of my own this year, but I don't know how well I'll be able to describe it! Some things are so complex... But, to inspire myself and to get an idea of what kinds of things I want to work with, I've been putting together a Sci-fi ideas Pinterest board. It's been really fun to imagine what kind of 'image' my made-up world might have and what kinds of crazy things might exist there. One of my favorites has got to be this one:
It's this 'umbrella' that uses air to keep the rain off. The air is pumped up through the handle and released out the top in a kind of 'curtain' that blocks the rain. How cool is that?! I really have no idea how I would use this in my novel (or any novel) but it's just. so. cool.
Anyway, I'm having a lot of fun. I don't know if it will continue, but I hope so, and I think it will be a great thing to try all the same!
